Types of Spirits

Helluva work in progress...

  • Banshee

  • Brownie

  • Foo Dogs

Foo dogs are spirits of protection. More specifically, they protect buildings, usually temples or places of historical importance. They range in size from two feet to the seven-foot Grand Foos found in the Asian countries, from where they are said to have originated. Foos are extremely protective of the place they guard and will continue to guard it and its inhabitants until the foo or the building is destroyed (even then, some will stay by their post even if the building is in ruins). Foo dogs have been known to work in pairs and protect a building together. Though dominantly dog-like in appearance, foos have some characteristics of lions, most notably their manes and the fact that they growl and roar, but don't bark or howl. Foo dogs have a wide variety of color and type (coat pattern, wavy/strait mane, presence of horns, build, size, etc.), so much so that there's never been a documented case of two completely identical foos. Unlike some spirits, foo dogs can fly around without feeling any gravitational pull from the earth.

  • Sprites

Sprites are little balls of ambient spirit energy, never more than a foot in diameter. They're completely harmless, not able to do much else other than give off a soft glow of light, normally blue or yellow in color. The light they give off cannot be seen by normal humans. 'Young' sprites are nothing more than floating lights, while 'mature' sprites have eyes, a mouth, and sometimes little arms as well. Sprites are only slightly sentient and all have the same personality: they are easy to please, playful, though never to the extent of trickery, and they will assist you if you ask them to (though, again, they can't do much). They can't talk, but mature sprites sometimes make noises when excited or happy, which is often. Sprites are able to fly higher than many other spirits, but how high they go tends to directly correspond with whatever happens to be the tallest object in the area.
